Big Boost for Sierra Leone Cricket Association

A donation of Le 4,854,000 has been given to the Sierra Leone Cricket Association by Standard Chartered Bank Sierra Leone to enable the association to meet its international commitments. The General Manager of the bank in an exclusive interview with the Sierra Express disclosed that the money is meant to help the association meet its needs for the up coming international games.

Mr. Thompson disclosed that the bank has chosen to sponsor cricket because people are too concentrated on football in the country and that this kind of sponsorship will give way to making the game of cricket more popular. He said that cricket is a strange sport amongst young people in the country and the main target of the bank is to make it very attractive to young people.

The manager intimated that the cash is specially meant to support the Cricket team for their trip to the South African and West African Tournaments. It is worth noting that this is not the first time Standard Chartered Bank has been involved in supporting sports in the country: Marathon competitions, Golf and other sports disciplines have been supported by the bank.

Reaching out to the Secretary General of the Cricket Association, Mr. Sydney Benka Coker for his comment on the donation, sincere appreciation was expressed by him. He called the gesture wonderful and added that Standard Chartered Bank is one of the only banks that are meeting its social cooperate obligations as a commercial institution. According to him, the donation is making it possible for the association to make the trip to South Africa. The Cricket Association Secretary General also disclosed that they are now creating strategies to give the game cricket recognition in Sierra Leone as has in other countries.
