Husband Threatens Wife to Name Boyfriend
On the
29th March 2008, one Kadiatu Kamara of Karefaya Village, Gbinleh Dixon Chiefdom, dashed into the office of a local NGO, United
for the Protection of Human Rights (UPHR) to complain about her husband who was threatening her to give names of people that
she has been making love with. The woman complained that she has been very ill for the past days but the husband, Alusine
Bangura is not showing concern but forcing her to name people she has made love with.
When
the case was investigated and Mr. Alusine Bangura was about to be sued to court, one Mr. Unisa Posseh Kamara who happens to
be the chairman of the local court No.2, intervened and promised that he will try to resolve the matter amicably.
It is
worth recalling that the issue of husbands forcing their wives to name people that the latter have been having affairs with;
has been an age old practice in Sierra Leone. This has been a kind of domestic abuse of the right of women that is accepted
in the Sierra Leonean community.
Chiefs and other elders in all the communities including Freetown have been
fully participating in this remote act. Gender based organizations have been concentrating their advocacies on other frolicsome
things forgetting about this serious mental torture of women.
