Customs Collector Warns Traders

The senior customs collector at the Gbalamuya/Pamalap; the Sierra Leone Guinea boarder in the Kambia district, Mr. Jinnah James has cautioned traders not to evade the customs department.

Speaking recently to a gathering of traders at the customs, Mr. James encouraged traders to face the department with their goods and that they will be treated very fairly. He said that smuggling of goods does no good to the income generation process for the country.

If traders smuggled goods unchecked into the country that will be detrimental to the country’s development, the strict looking controller said.

He urged traders to be law abiding by paying taxes because government depends very strongly on those taxes.

The Fullah Traders Union Kambia District, Alhaji Juju Barrie, promised the controller that the union will continue its stance in helping the government in her development drive.

Alhaji Barrie also thanked the new customs boss for his confidence building drive he is undertaking. “It is good for us to sit together and discuss the way forward. That makes us feel part of the system,” the Union chief reiterated.

The Local Unit Commander, Chief Superintendent, Mustapha Kamara, warned traders to avoid smuggling.  According to him, enough warning has been issued to traders to stop smuggling.  He said that one of government’s major revenue collections is through NRA; therefore the police are not treating it lightly.

The LUC however appealed to traders, to put their shoulder to the wheel for the progress of the country and further appealed to the traders to stop smuggling local food stuffs from the country as that will inflict more suffering on the people.
